I wrote an article on Strawberry Fair, aka Jenny Franzén, on W♥M recently. Since Franzén actually did a few covers, I thought I'd talk about them.
First of all, she did a cover of The Flaming Lips' "She Don't Use Jelly", which I don't have. But I'm told that the words "tangerines" are replaced by "strawberries".
I also don't have the orginal Fat Tulips' "Where's Claire Grogan Now", which the song Where is Alex Taylor Now? is based on.
I do have both version of "Heaven Only Knows", which I may have to save for another time. Strawberry Fair's version is pretty faithful to the original song.... it's always weird to think that it's just one person doing a song that basically has three girls (The Shangri-Las) singing the song.
My favorite cover song is "Attack!", originally by The Toys. Check out this funky "music video" of the "Attack!" song on youtube. I later found out that this song actually is part of a musical movie called It's a Bikini World (1966). It looks like a typical 60s goofy movie.
Apparently this appearance in the movie, as well as American Bandstand, was at the height of their popularity. After changing record labels and producers and failing to chart in 1967, the band broke up.
Most of The Toys' songs were written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, including "Attack!"
If you like what you heard, please head over to facetterad, which has all the ordering information.

I wrote an article on Sinead O'Connor and mentioned that "Nothing Compares 2 U" was originally by a band called The Family. The quality of the song is so-so as it's from vinyl that someone had ripped (you can hear the crackles and pops).
When Morris Day left The Time, Prince arranged all the remaining members (minus Jesse Johnson, who also left the band) to become The Family. They ended up releasing one self-titled album.
With dismal album sales, the band broke up shortly afterward, however they reunited to play for charity on December 2003. What's interesting is that last year (Jan 2007), they announced they were indeed back together to record a new CD.
Anyway, regarding the self-titled debut album, only cassettes and LPs were released in the US. There are CD versions, but it was only sold in Japan and Europe, but they were issued well pasted the band's prime in the 90s when CDs were being introduced.

I just wrote an article on The Darjeeling Limited, which I didn't really like as a storyline and movie, but the soundtrack is pretty sweet. I talked about "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)" by Peter Sarstedt.
Strangely enough, of all people, Right Said Fred did an absolutely faithful cover to this song!
What? What? What?
Where is the eurotechno beat???????
This song is from their last album For Sale (2006). Apparently they also remade "I'm too Sexy" the 2007 version (which I'll politely request to not hear.)

As I previously mentioned on my review of The Raveonettes concert, they did a cover song called "French Disko". I promised the original version by Stereolab, so here it is.
I was actually more surprised that The Editors recorded a version of this song as a B-Side on their Munich single.
The lyrics are in English, but it's quite hard to understand with the French accent. The appeal of the song is actually in its guitars work.
Though this world's essentially an absurd place to be living in
It doesn't call for total withdrawalI've been told it's a fact of life
Men have to kill one another
Well I say there are still things worth fighting forLa Resistance!
Though this world's essentially an absurd place to be living in
It doesn't call for (bubble withdrawal)It said human existence is pointless
As acts of rebellious solidarity
Can bring sense in this worldLa Resistance!

It's been a while since I updated cover lover.
Yesterday was a perfectly good day so my friend and I went on a six hour bike ride. We went over to where the fallen bridge site, but most of the roads leading up to that point was all blocked off. We had to settle for a walkway bridge about half a mile north.
A lot of people were out that day too and we had a slew of Segway users (tourists) go by us.
Then I went to see Jim Gaffigan at the Orpheum Theater and now I'm completely sore. Who knew there were so many hills along the river?
Today's cover is "Trouble", originally by Shampoo. I am actually compiling a bunch of girl-group (e.g. like the Spice Girls, etc) for W♥M, so if you have any recommendations, let me know.
There's not a lot of covers for this song, surprisingly. I thought because it's such a popular 90s song that people would be falling left & right trying their version of the song.
Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine
www.carterusm.co.uk
Formed by "Jim Bob" and "Fruitbat", they're probably better known as Carter USM. They recorded a cover of "Trouble" for a B-side.
Sixthline
myspace.com/sixthline
The other cover is by Sixthline, who I've never heard of. The audio is taken from youtube video, so the audio is pretty bad.
PS, the Shampoo cover art is the US version... which may have been really popular during the Power Rangers movie or something.

I have three or four vutube videos shot. I just need to actually sit down and edit them. I just did a video today actually, this "morning" at 2pm. It's part of my cooking for dummies guide...
I was actually going to do a writeup on Herman Dune sometime today too, he released about seven cover songs under his Yayahoni stage name. You can download all the songs on the website.
I'm including some other covers of "Be My Baby", orginally by 60s girl-group, The Ronettes. I believe "Be My Baby" is their most well-known song.
What you probably didn't know is that the band's name was named after the lead singer, Veronica Bennett. If you can't figure out how they got Ronettes out Veronica's name, then you are in trouble...
The other members in the band were Ronnie's sister and cousin, they broke up in 1973, when Ronnie went solo. By the way, she was at one time married to Phil Specter, who was under the spotlight recently with the suspicion of murdering actress Lana Clarkson.
Most of the cover songs are pretty good, The Dollyrots punky version is especially good. The most drastically different is probably Ivy with their almost ambient version. This is off their covers album, Guestroom (2002).

It's been raining all day today. I'm just taking it easy on my laptop, listening to the audio commentary to 300, which I rented from the video store. For a long time, this rental was constantly all checked out. I found out that, in fact, they weren't checked out, but had them behind the counter. I guess next time, I'll just ask the video store people.
So this post is dedicated to wb mook. I haven't heard that Nick Cave version before, so I thought maybe you'd like to hear other "In the Ghetto" songs. The most interesting one of these is Paul de Leeuw's version, which is wacky. The Cranberries version is pretty interesting too. The cover is only available on the limited edition of Wake Up and Smell the Coffee.
Since it seems I get a lot of review copies of CDs and I don't really want WHM to turn into a gigant new/developing artist page (I want to mix it up with established artists, world music, and stuff I want to talk about). But expect at least one new artist every week.
If anyone wants to review music, send me a note. I will mail you a random CD in my stack and you get to review it. I can't guarantee that you'd like it, but I usually try and send you something that might fit your taste (so please include a list of bands/genre you like and I'll see what I can do.)
PS, I also attended my first Soccer game in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. It was raining at the game, so we brought garbage bags to sit on with my umbrella. Our team's terrible, by the way.
If you're jonesing for a cover, check out W♥M for 23 tracks of covers, remixes and samples of "The Neverending Story", it's co-written by Marcus Mebes.
Anyway, undoubtably this is one of everyone's favorite video: a-ha's "Take on Me" video. Needless to say, the song's inspired a few bands to do their own covers of it.
This is not a definitive list, just some covers that I thought were different from the original.
A-HA
www.a-ha.com
Norway's a-ha first found global success with their 1984 with their single, "Take on Me" from their debut album. The single climbed even higher on the chart, fueled by MTV heavy rotation of this wonderful half-animated video.

VISION DEVINE visiondivine.com This is a metal band from Italy. I think this is the best version of "Take on Me". It's metal, but it's not screamo, and there's lots of power chords thrown in. (Check out that keyboard action in the middle too). |
MXPX www.mxpx.com Washington's MxPx covered this song for their 1995's On the Cover EP, which feature seven other covers. The band is still around, they're on the recent Warp tour | |||
|
A1 yahoo.com British boy band, A1 released this song as a single in 2000, reaching #1 in the UK charts. The one note of interest is that they were amazingly popular in Asian countries. On their Indonesia tour, four teenage girls were killed in a stampede of rabid overzealous fans. |
BIG REEL FISH reel-big-fish.com This is a Ska band from Orange County, California (notable home to many punk bands). They contributed this cover song for the soundtrack to 1998's Baseketball, a film by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of Southpark fame. Their album Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps For Free was released on July 10, 2007. |

Igot a few text messages on my phone asking if I was okay. I didn't know why they were so worried, until I turned on the television to see that all the local channels were reporting the collapse of Interstate 35W's bridge over the Mississippi River! WOW.
My sister and I was in the area last Sunday and there were all these constructions and as I recalled our exit was blocked off, so we had to exit on the next available exit and got turned around a little...
There's really no need for introduction for Supergrass, I've already written an entry for for them and I'm almost certain someone will get around to Of Montreal on W♥M.
But just quickly, Of Montreal are not from Canada. They're based out of Athens, Georgia. They got their name from the lead singer's dating with a woman from Montreal... but I don't think it ever worked out.
"Alright" was the follow-up single to "Caught by the Fuzz" by Supergrass. It featured Danny on piano and it was just a really fun song about being young and feeling alright.
To be honest, the song now makes me feel old :/
